Equipment of the Experimental Linguistics Lab

The laboratory of Experimental Linguistics has the following equipment:

Electroencephalography equipment for the measure of brain response

It allows the register of EEG signs and evoked potentials of electrophysiological response in light of the presentation of visual and hearing stimuli.

Features of the equipment:

  • Electroencephalography equipment of Bionics. 64 Channels Brainamps model.
  • 2 boosters for EEG/ERP’s of monopolar 32 Channels (64 channels altogether).
  • 1 booster for EEG/ERP’s of 8 biopolar peripheral Channels.
  • Speed of sampling up to 5.000 samples/second.
  • Booster powered by rechargeable batteries with 20 hours of autonomy.
  • Digital transmission of the signal by optical fibre.
  • Booster that allows working with passive and active electrodes.
  • Compatible booster with any program of Stimuli Presentation such as E-prime, Presentation, Superlab, STIM…

Eye tracking equipment Tobii Pro 1.200 Hz

It has Hardware Tobii Spectrum 1.200 Hz and Software Tobii Pro Lab Full Edition.

Features of the “eye tracker” system Tobii Pro Spectrum:

  1. It compiles data of precise and exact gaze.
  2. Unit of integrated processing.
  3. The system fulfils the most demanding claims of studies that need a high rate of sampling; i.e. the necessity of studying ocular movements such as microsaccades, saccades, correction saccades, fixations, changes on the pupil size and blink. The great stability in the sampling rate (<0.3 % of variability) allows a precise synchronization of the gaze data with other sources data, i.e. EEG systems (hardware synchronization: the system can send and receive stimuli). The frequency of sampling is used in order to detect subtle eye movements, such as microsaccades.

Unique features of the Tobii Pro Lab analysis software package:

The Pro Lab software, suitable for conducting experiments with the Tobii Pro Spectrum eye tracker, has 3 modules for Design, Recording and Analysis of the data obtained and includes, among others, the following unique features:

– Feedback from the researcher to the participant in real time (gaze position available on the secondary monitor) through live viewing functionality.
– Automatic calibration validation for more accurate estimates of data quality after calibration of the eye tracker
– Dynamic areas of interest (AOIs) tool
– Segment-based analysis for the video stimulus
– Instant access to collected data through visualization tools (e.g., heat maps, gaze streams, etc.) and comprehensive statistics (time to first fixation, fixation duration, etc.)
– Set of saccadic metrics available for exporting saccadic eye movement measurements, such as amplitude, peak velocity, and direction
– Speed and ease of experiment design, analysis and communication of large volumes of data
– Tobii I-VT fixation filter with customizable thresholds and filtering methods
– Noise reduction filter using moving median
– GSR compatibility (Shimmer already integrated)
