In this study we offer a brief overview of the main terminological uses of semantics since its formation as a science, and examine how semantic values were marked by historiographic development, methodological tendencies or theoretical conceptions, in addition to a range of complementary denominations involving a more specific typology of the discipline that constitute the term semantics.

Structural semantics is a primarily European structural linguistic approach to the content level of language which basically derives from two historical sources. The main inspiration stems from Ferdinand de Saussure’s Cours de linguistique générale (1916), where the Genevan linguist also formulates the fundamental principles of semantic analysis: the twofold character of the linguistic sign, the inner determination of its content by the—allegedly autonomous—linguistic system, the consequent exclusion of the extralinguistic reality, the notion of opposition inside the system, and the concept of “associative relations” in the domain of semantics. This tradition was later refined by Hjelmslev and Coseriu, who introduced theoretical and methodological strength and rigor, suggesting systematic analyses in terms of semantic features linked by (binary) opposition. The second source of inspiration was the more holistic concept elaborated by Wilhelm von Humboldt, who saw language as a means of structuring the world. In the second half of the 20th century, structural semantics was mainstream semantics (to the extent that semantic analysis was accepted at all). A long series of authors deepened these historical traditions in theoretical and empirical studies, some of them suggesting secondary and/or partial models. Finally, prototype semantics and cognitive semantics strove to downgrade structural semantics by turning back to a more holistic conception of meaning including the speakers’ knowledge of the world, although not without introducing the alternative structural notion of “network.”

In the field of Natural Language Processing, linguistic resources are structured and detailed descriptions of a certain language. They are considered as key elements for studying languages and developing applications. However, these repositories are slow and difficult to build, and most of them focuses on English. This work tries to improve the lack of linguistic resources in Spanish by transferring part of the information encoded in the FrameNet project into Spanish. For this purpose, we developed an automatic procedure able to align the different frame predicates with the WordNet synsets that best represent them. Our system reaches an 88% precision and makes it possible to reuse this semantic resource for linguistic studies in Spanish.

Most projects focused on computational semantics have been developed for English, therefore the importance of this book as a useful resource to carry out semantic analysis in Spanish, a field that is very important for automatic translation and for terminology, lexicography and, in general, for any automatic process in which the lexical content must be taken into account. This work’s main aim is, on the one hand, to carry out the selection of FrameNet frames that belong to the domain of medicine and, on the other hand, to connect these FrameNet frames with synsets -equivalents- provided by WordNet, in order to, finally, translate the database into Spanish.
//
In this work, we introduce some of the most important resources devoted to lexical semantics, such as WordNet or FrameNet, and those focusing on Spanish such as 3LB-LEX or Adesse. Of these, this project focuses on FrameNet. The project aims to document the range of semantic and syntactic combinatory possibilities of words in English. Words are grouped according to the different frames or situations evoked by their meaning. If we focus on a particular topic domain like medicine and we try to describe it in terms of FrameNet, we probably would obtain frames representing it like CURE, formed by words like cure.v, heal.v or palliative.a or MEDICAL CONDITIONS with lexical units such as arthritis.n, asphyxia.n or asthma.n. The purpose of this work is to develop an automatic means of selecting frames from a particular domain and to translate them into Spanish. As we have stated, we will focus on medicine.

The evolution of the linguistic worldmap reflects the progressive decrease of spokenlanguages around the planet, as well as the disappearance of linguistic systems in the context of language contact. The analysis of the causes of this loss allows us as well to identify a great number of endangered languages, for which the institutional support becomes essential in order to foster their preservation. The analysis of legal documents, of general or particular nature, within the framework of linguistic rights, will allow us to find those contexts of use in which those languages can be supported by institutions. Besides, the analysis will allow us to pinpoint different actions varying from mere preservation, sometimes almost only by documentary means, of minority languages, to the development of policies intended to really guarantee the use of languages in the public domain, such as education, mass media, and public administration, from which these had been absent in previous times.

As van Dijk argues, ideologies are social beliefs which are usually transmitted through discourse, and therefore journalistic and political texts are seen to be two trusted means of communication which are ideal for that function. Within the framework of the relation between language and ideology, my aim is to carry out a critical discourse analysis of various texts of this type. I shall begin by comparing the content of seven different newspapers published on 28 October 2017, the day after the Catalan Parliament’s unilateral declaration of independence (UDI). Four of these are national in scope (ABC, El País, El Mundo, and La Razón) and three are published in Catalonia (La Vanguardia, El Periódico de Catalunya, and Ara). I then focus my attention on the information expressed in two of these, namely ABC and La Vanguardia, with the aim of examining the different ways the same information is treated and the linguistic mechanisms used to downplay or enhance the same facts for different ideological purposes. In a similar vein, I go on to analyse the different discourse approaches adopted by the main political parties when dealing with the concept of the State in their respective manifestos for the 2019 general election.

News discourse nowadays is generally regarded as a means for the transmission of ideology and other predefined ideas, usually related to political viewpoints and, therefore, political discourses. From this standpoint (widely discussed by van Dijk, Fairclough, and Wodak, among others), I intend to achieve an adequate qualitative description of conceptual networks and some general patterns of persuasive communicative goals throughout data obtained from written pieces of discourse in Spanish media, focusing my attention on a series of key words, frequently used by politicians and reproduced by the media, previously gathered from Spanish main parties’ electoral programs. My assumption is that, being involved with political ideology, patterns found within news discourse support the idea that a positive or a negative position is defended regarding those contents represented by said key words.

Clinical case formulations (CCFs) can be organized and communicated in several ways but one of the most effective is through CCF causal diagrams (CCFCDs). Haynes et al., Psychological Assessment, 2020, 32, 541 illustrated how the psychometric evaluation of CCFCDs could be facilitated by assigning quantitative values to the clinician’s judgments in a CCF. Although quantification could facilitate the psychometric evaluation CCFCDs, it is less clear that it can help clinicians make decisions about the best treatment foci. This article presents an open-source computer program (Clinical Case Formulation Causal Diagram Calculator, CCFCDC) for the path analyses of quantified CCFCDs, based on the free computing language Python, to assist in clinical decision making. The operation, examples, assets, and limitations of the CCFCDC are discussed in the context of measurement principles, precision, and uncertainty in clinical judgments. This article analyzes the occurrence of performative root phenomena in complement clauses. I show that the clauses that host this kind of phenomena have the same distribution as direct speech complements. I argue that the correspondence is based on the fact that, due to their rich syntactic left periphery, these embedded clauses convey speech acts. This assumption receives further support by the grammatical behavior of what I argue are the two major classes of verbs subordinating direct speech and ERP-hosting embedded clauses: locutionary and illocutionary embedding verbs. I analyze illocutionary verbs as bearing an abstract illocutionary predicate selecting either a propositional or a speech-act type, and locutionary verbs as ordinary relational predicates selecting a speech-act type. Taken together, these elements allow for a straightforward syntax-semantics interface and explain the differentiated behavior of root phenomena in complements to locutionary and illocutionary verbs.

Appositives convey not-at-issue meaning and as such do not generally fall within the scope of operators. Recent research shows that they are, however, capable of shifting interpretation in embedded contexts (Amaral et al., 2007, Harris and Potts, 2009, Sæbø, 2011). This poses the question of whether, and to what extent, they act like presuppositions (i.e. not-at-issue meaning contributing to the semantics of embedded complements) and of how their content becomes intensionally relativized to the attitude holder of an embedding predicate. In this work, I will provide answers to these questions on the basis of new and old evidence from appositives occurring in embedded clausal complements. I propose that, syntactically, appositives are flexibly attached to different (embedded and matrix) sentence positions (Nowen, 2014, Schlenker, 2013). Meaning-wise, the application of the general interpretive requirement on appositives that they be eliminable (Schlenker, 2013) causes their low-attached instantiations to be possibly entailed in their local context. For embedded complements, this local context corresponds to the modal base of the quantification conveyed by the relevant attitude predication (Heim, 1992). This predicts the similarities and differences between them and presupposition triggers in embedded contexts. It also accounts for a wealth of data regarding the behavior of shifted appositives that are otherwise left unexplained.

In this paper, within the framework of the fields of linguistics applied to language teaching, bilingualism, and language contact, the written productions of 40 bilingual speakers of English and Spanish in Gibraltar will be analysed in order to find some of the linguistic features commonly associated to heritage languages. In this British overseas territory, English –which is the only official language and the language of instruction in schools– comes into contact with Spanish, acquired orally at home by part of its population, and learnt as a foreign language at school. The informants, who were attending the last year of Secondary Education in a comprehensive school in Gibraltar, were administered a lexical availability test. The results show the presence in Spanish of some special characteristics related to heritage speakers’ linguistic repertoire, such as the lack of gender and number agreement, the wrong assignment of gender to nouns, the incorrect use of prepositions, and the overuse of semantic and syntactic calques due to literal translation from English.

Constructional idioms are phraseologisms that include at least one free slot among their constituting elements, which must be completed in their discursive use, such as X and Y in the construction [tanto X y tanta Y], as can be seen in “El don de gentes que se pierde con tanto chat, tanto whatsapp y tanta leche”. This formal peculiarity, together with their syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and discursive characteristics, makes both linguistic and, lexicographical description difficult. However, research is being carried out in the field of phraseology with the aim of obtaining a proper analysis of them, based on Construction Grammar. Using this methodological approach, this paper first examines the lexicographical treatment of constructional idioms in two Spanish dictionaries: the DFEM and the DFDEA, and, subsequently, presents two proposals for dictionaries for these units, compiled from a constructivist perspective. The final aim is to reflect on how to write a lexicographical article that would facilitate a layperson’s dictionary search for these units and the understanding of their characteristics, enabling their correct use.

In a restrictive sense, Forensic Linguistics can be defined as the discipline whose main objective is the study of language as evidence, that means that it deals with the analysis of language evidences when they are involved in a legal process or a police investigation. This field of applied linguistics has a relatively short scientific history, since the very first appearance of the term is dated in 1968. For this reason, certain aspects of the subject are still in development or need further consolidation. One of the problems that should be solved are those related to its terminology, which does not present the same level of standardization or the same difficulties in all languages. Specifically, in this paper, the terminological problems caused by translation from English to Spanish will be discussed.

The arrival of the coronavirus pandemic in Spain and the subsequent confinement of the population has been accompanied by the intensive use of social networks as a space for information and communication. NGDOs (Non-Governmental Development Organizations) have joined this trend, with the inclusion of the coronavirus among the topics that are part of their communicational discourse of solidarity. This article analyzes the relationship between the communication practices of Spanish NGDOs during the first weeks of the confinement caused by the pandemic, and the objective of the structural change in society towards which these organizations are aiming, on the horizon of the Objectives of Sustainable Development (ODS) and Agenda 2030. From the methodological point of view, this research uses corpus linguistics and content analysis of the most frequent syntagmas in the tweets published by NGDOs and in the hashtags used by them. The analytical work is completed with the adoption of lexical analysis tools such as Sketch Engine and the R rtweet package, which allow the extraction of tweets and the analysis of Big Data. The results point to a significant weight of the degree of institutionalization of the organizations and their legal form in the type of implemented discourse. Despite the fact that the analyzed organizations have social change as their objective, the analysis of their communication practices allows us to identify hegemonic frameworks that are moving in the opposite direction.

Currently, there is scarce knowledge about the relation between spectral bands modulations and the basis of cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis (MS). In this sense, analyzing the evoked or phase activity can confirm results from traditional event-related potential (ERP) studies. However, studying the induced or nonphase activity may be necessary to elucidate hidden compensatory or affected cognitive mechanisms. In this study, 30 remitting-relapsing multiple sclerosis patients and 30 healthy controls (HCs) matched in sociodemographic variables performed a visual oddball task. The main goal was to analyze phase and nonphase alpha and gamma bands by applying temporal spectral evolution (TSE) and its potential relation with cognitive impairment in these patients. The behavioural results showed slower reaction time and poorer accuracy in MS patients compared to controls. In contrast, the time-frequency analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) revealed a delay in latency and lower amplitude in MS patients in evoked and induced alpha compared to controls. With respect to the gamma band, there were no differences between the groups. In summary, MS patients showed deficits in early sensorial (evoked alpha activity) and cognitive processing (induced alpha activity in longer latencies), whereas the induced gamma band supported the hypothesis of its role in translation of attentional focus (induced activity) and did not show strong activity in this paradigm (visual oddball).

Introduction
The applications of artificial intelligence, and in particular automatic learning or “machine learning” (ML), constitute both a challenge and a great opportunity in numerous scientific, technical, and clinical disciplines. Specific applications in the study of multiple sclerosis (MS) have been no exception, and constitute an area of increasing interest in recent years.

Objective
We present a systematic review of the application of ML algorithms in MS.

Materials and methods
We used the PubMed search engine, which allows free access to the MEDLINE medical database, to identify studies including the keywords “machine learning” and “multiple sclerosis.” We excluded review articles, studies written in languages other than English or Spanish, and studies that were mainly technical and did not specifically apply to MS. The final selection included 76 articles, and 38 were rejected.

Conclusions
After the review process, we established 4 main applications of ML in MS: 1) classifying MS subtypes; 2) distinguishing patients with MS from healthy controls and individuals with other diseases; 3) predicting progression and response to therapeutic interventions; and 4) other applications. Results found to date have shown that ML algorithms may offer great support for health professionals both in clinical settings and in research into MS.

Business discourse has always captured the attention of several social and cultural fields. Within the framework of linguistics, disciplines such as pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and linguistic anthropology have contributed to the analysis of this communication process and the design of a linguistic model, suited to its contextual, social, and cultural determining factors. This chapter addresses the need for expanding this model by the incorporation of the latest achievements in psycholinguistics through a neurosemantic approach to language, focusing on three points: (1) the mental organisation of linguistic knowledge into networks; (2) the strong ties between linguistic processes and other cognitive functions; and (3) the effectiveness of the contrast principle which emerges from the lexical units and transcends the textual level. The business language data used in this study derive from texts related to and/or produced by three Spanish companies. The analysis is intended to attain a more comprehensive formulation of business discourse as a communicative modality, and, in addition, determine the major cognitive strategies found in its different textual manifestations.

As a result of the neurocognitive approach to the lexicon that disciplines such as Psycholinguistics and Neurolinguistics carry out and, consequently, the addition of the mental and brain mechanisms that underlie the encoding and decoding of meanings in the field of Semantics, a series of terms or terminological units arises. They can be grouped into three main axes: the lexical mental and brain representations, the computational and associative processes involved in lexical-semantic comprehension and production, and the acquisition and loss of meanings. The main aims of our paper are 1) to assess the inclusion of these Psycholinguistics contents in Lexical Semantics, 2) to analyze their degree of consolidation and vitality in a set of dictionaries of Linguistics, and 3) to identify possible deficiencies in their terminological treatment and draw up a proposal for their conceptual integration.
