Applied Linguistics can contribute to the enhancement of economic growth and societal well-being by addressing today’s social challenges and integrating employability, internationalization initiatives and knowledge transfer across higher education and elsewhere. This volume aims first to raise awareness of the significant contribution of Applied Linguistics in these key areas and then explore the challenges which scholars, researchers and students need to address when trying to build successful and sustainable collaboration between universities, industries and public sectors in national, transnational and international contexts. It also provides clear pointers for bringing university degrees in line with today’s job market and social demands.

This chapter introduces the capabilities of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) and investigates the advantages of using two particular packages like ATLAS.ti and NVivo for the analysis of qualitative data in the language-, genre-, and discourse-related studies featuring in academic settings. It then explores and discusses scholarly articles in the field of English for specific and academic purposes that were published in five renowned journals and employed these two software packages. The analysis of these studies contributes to mapping the main features of computer-assisted qualitative research in the field and reveals that the research of the language, discourse, and genres that occur in academic settings can be efficiently supported and successfully enhanced by current software.

For several years, a research project focused on the study of terminological uses of lexical semantics has been developed. From this investigation, in the terminographical praxis, we are observing considerably more conceptual content than could be expected, as the project is based in the creation of a lexicon of the technical uses of lexical semantics, rather than one of technicisms. This means that, starting from explanatory sub-indices, it is necessary to create as many terminological documents as there are different acceptions for each lexicographical entry. In this article, besides presenting the methodological procedure used for our explanatory model of terminological representation, as well as the terminological graphic interface the conceptual relations existing in lexical semantics will be highlighted. These will appear in a terminographic interface through nodes showing the type of relationship existing among terminological uses. Our main aim is to prove, by means of the analysis of a series of terms or terminological units, how the different conceptual relationships constitute a relevant rule for linguistic behaviour in the identification and establishment of the various uses and sub-uses corresponding to each terminographical entry.

The present study is aimed at presenting CLIL university teachers’ attitudes towards the implementation of bilingual education at university. Results show that content teachers who take part in CLIL teacher training courses tend to agree on certain positive as well as negative beliefs regarding bilingual education at university. Once the information obtained from the survey has been examined, this chapter will focus on the reasons identified as to reject the implementation of CLIL in higher education. This work will then offer possible solutions to the hindering zones identified in CLIL teaching by describing a CLIL teacher training formula which should help future CLIL professors in their daily tasks.

University teacher training specialised in bilingual education is spreading around Spanish universities. Particularly in Andalusia, where our research originates, universities are searching for systematised methods to train their future bilingual teachers in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). This paper presents the case of the University of Cadiz, where this study was carried out. This university followed a new training formula led by an ESP (English for Specific Purposes) teacher who performed the role of CLIL teacher trainer. Based on AUTHOR’s (2017) description of the aforesaid CLIL teacher training scheme known as “CLILUT courses” (that is to say, CLIL Training or University Teachers), this study focuses on an in-depth analysis  of CLIL trial lesson plans elaborated within such a peer-teacher environment. The present study is then aimed at examining the data obtained through in-class direct observation of 68 CLIL trial lessons which were created from 2010 to 2014 at the University of Cádiz and analysed with the help of rubrics created upon Nunan’s theory (1989). Results show that ESP teachers can offer substantial help for new CLIL university teachers who might face specific foreign language-related problems when starting to take part in bilingual programmes.

In this article, we present the results and conclusions of the quantitative and qualitative analysis carried out on a corpus of over 700 potential neologisms, inserted in 815 different contexts which were detected in the analysis of 17 different copies of three written media outlets. The methodology and protocols used for the analysis are those established by the Observatori de Neologia del Institut Universitari de Lingüística Aplicada de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Neology Observatory of the Applied Linguistics Institute at Pompeu Fabra University) which coordinates the Network of Neology Observatories for Peninsular Spanish, of which the Neology Section of the University of Cadiz, directed by us since its inauguration in 2008, is a member. In this study, we have focused on determining the linguistic category of potential neologisms, paying due attention to the context in which the new lexical unit appears; the type of neologism according to its creation process; the word-formation resource or mechanism from which it has arisen; the foreign language from which the potential neologism has been imported, in the case of loan neologisms, and whether or not it is used as an adapted loan in the receiving language. Likewise, we have distinguished between potential neologisms that are different forms; between those that are identical forms but, belonging to different linguistic categories, are different lexical units or words; the frequency of occurrence of each form and lexical unit, and those that are terminological units or terms but which appear in theses articles or informational texts in the written press.

When considering the form in which a neologism is manifested, researchers distinguish between formal neology or neology of form and meaning, based on the creation of a new signifier or a new signifier and signified, and semantic neology or neology of meaning, which implies the presence of a new meaning or acception for an existing signifier. In this article, we analyse semantic neology and, more specifically, the nature or character of the new meaning or acception that this entails. We intend to show that lexical, categorial and syntactic or structural meanings, defined within the framework of European linguistic structuralism, must be taken into account when establishing a typology of semantic neologisms. This article will contribute to the differentiation between the subtypes of semantic neologisms that are usually enumerated and the inclusion in this semantic neology of some creation procedures that have not yet been dealt with or systematically included in formal neology.

The study of pragmatic competence has gained increasing importance within second language assessment over the last three decades. However, its study in L2 language testing is still scarce. The aim of this paper is to research the extent to which pragmatic competence as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) has been accommodated in the task descriptions and rating scales of two of the most popular Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPIs) at a C1 level: Cambridge’s Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) and Trinity’s Integrated Skills in English (ISE) III. To carry out this research, OPI tests are first defined, highlighting their differences from L2 pragmatic tests. After pragmatic competence in the CEFR is examined, focusing on the updates in the new descriptors, CAE and ISE III formats, structure and task characteristics are compared, showing that, while the formats and some characteristics are found to differ, the structures and task types are comparable. Finally, we systematically analyse CEFR pragmatic competence in the task skills and rating scale descriptors of both OPIs. The findings show that the task descriptions incorporate mostly aspects of discourse and design competence. Additionally, we find that each OPI is seen to prioritise different aspects of pragmatic competence within their rating scale, with CAE focusing mostly on discourse competence and fluency, and ISE III on functional competence. Our study shows that the tests fail to fully accommodate all aspects of pragmatic competence in the task skills and rating scales, although the aspects they do incorporate follow the CEFR descriptors on pragmatic competence. It also reveals a mismatch between the task competences being tested and the rating scale. To conclude, some research lines are proposed.

Research on audiovisual translation (AVT) has so far been basically restricted to the European context, almost completely ignoring the Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America. Furthermore, the background and factors that influenced the emergence and development of audiovisual translation modes in Spanish America have not been studied either thus far. The present article shows a review of the historical, social, political, technical and professional aspects that have shaped audiovisual translation in Venezuela, a key country in the evolution of AVT in Spanish America, and the influence of the so-called ‘neutral Spanish’. The research is based, in part, on the nuclear testimonies of some of the main translators, revisers and managers of AVT in Venezuela.

This article presents a historical overview of audiovisual translation (AVT) in Puerto Rico, as a pioneering country in audiovisual translation in the Caribbean, which became a true dubbing power in the Spanish-speaking world from 1958 to the late 1970s. Special emphasis is placed on the factors that influenced the establishment of AVT modes in the region. The language model (i.e., the Spanish-language variety) used in audiovisual translation in different Latin American countries, and the use and influence of the so-called ‘neutral Spanish’ on the implementation of the different AVT modes in the various Spanish-speaking countries will be discussed. Also, the work process and conditions of audiovisual translators in Puerto Rico are described.

Although Translation Studies have dealt with the translation of animated films into the various modes of audiovisual translation (dubbing, subtitling, etc.), such studies have focused almost exclusively on films translated from English into other languages. So far, there are hardly any studies analysing the translation into English of cultural elements contained in animation films produced in Spanish language. This article analyses the dubbing and subtitling of three animation films produced in Spain-Planet 51 (2009), Las aventuras de Tadeo Jones (2012), and Atrapa la bandera (2015), with the aim of finding out which cultural elements have been included in the original Spanish version of each of these productions and how they have been translated into the English dubbed and subtitled versions. To this end, a working methodology was developed based on the classification of cultural elements and on the various translation strategies used for dubbing and subtitling cultural content. Results show that almost half of the cultural elements compiled demand the services of a translator. These cases have been classified under the ‘Environment’ category and the ‘Cinematography’ subtype. This final subtype has a major impact on the corpus.

Computer-assisted translation tools are increasingly supplemented by the presence of machine translation (MT) in different areas and working environments, from technical translation to translation in international organizations. MT is also present in the translation of tourism texts, from brochures to food menus, websites and tourist guides. Its need or suitability for use is the subject of growing debate. This article presents a comparative analysis of tourist guides translated by a human translator and three machine translation systems. The aims are to determine a first approach to the level of quality of machine translation in tourist texts and to establish whether some tourist texts can be translated using machine translation alone or whether human participation is necessary, either for the complete translation of the text or only for post-editing tasks.

This volume seeks to investigate how humour translation has developed since the beginning of the 21st century, focusing in particular on new ways of communication. The authors, drawn from a range of countries, cultures and academic traditions, address and debate how today’s globalised communication, media and new technologies are influencing and shaping the translation of humour.

Examining both how humour translation exploits new means of communication and how the processes of humour translation may be challenged and enhanced by technologies, the chapters cover theoretical foundations and implications, and methodological practices and challenges. They include a description of current research or practice, and comments on possible future developments. The contributions interconnect around the issue of humour creation and translation in the 21st century, which can truly be labelled as the age of multimedia.

Accessible and engaging, this is essential reading for advanced students and researchers in Translation Studies and Humour Studies.

Even though audiovisual translation (AVT) is growing and flourishing throughout the world, it is practically unheard-of in the Caribbean, where accessibility faces an even bleaker existence. The circumstances of the deaf and hard of hearing (also referred to as D/deaf) are no less alarming: social barriers and exclusion are widespread. This paper emphasizes the need to make subtitles accessible in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, specifically on the islands of Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic, and underscores the challenges faced by the D/deaf communities on each island. Our research focuses on issues like AVT laws and regulations, the habits of viewers of audiovisual (AV) products, and literacy and limitations on each island. This paper also examines the different types of D/deaf audiovisual consumers in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean and the difficulties each community faces when accessing media and entertainment. Our research reveals the current state of AVT accessibility in this region and provides a foundation for influencing legislators to begin enforcing AVT regulations and drafting SDH guidelines.

This article offers new applications on the use of audiovisual translation as a task within the framework of task-based learning and the effect it has on listening comprehension. In addition, it seeks to expand the limited academic information and literature related to the use of subtitling as a language learning tool for students without translation training, specifically within the context of english for the military or english for the security forces. On the other hand, within the area of english for specific purposes, and more specifically english for the military, its aim is to provide the basis for future research within that context for the use of subtitled audiovisual material (both interlingual and intralingual) and audiovisual translation, as well as other audiovisual translation modes such as dubbing and audio description. It also offers a critical review of the use of a virtual learning management system in the provision of authentic audiovisual material and the teaching and subsequent execution of subtitling tasks. The study was carried out in an entirely virtual environment, with the aim of creating a positive impact on the teaching and learning of audiovisual translation, especially in traditional translator training programs, providing a model of how audiovisual translation subjects can be taught in an entirely virtual form, taking advantage of available software applications and encouraging a greater use thereof.

Spanish doubly filled complementizer (DFComp) clauses differ from plain embedded questions in a number of respects (availability of discourse-related projections, islandhood, sequence of tenses, licensing of discourse particles). I argue that the contrast is caused by the presence in the left periphery of these clauses of an illocutionary projection (Haegeman 2004, 2006; Coniglio and Zegrean 2012; Woods 2016b) between the leftmost projection, here identified as Haegeman’s (2004) SubP, and the criterial interrogative projections (InterP and QembP). This illocutionary projection prevents syncretism of the clause-typing and the criterial projections, the default option in plain embedded clauses. This not only explains the range of structural phenomena differentiating DFComp clauses and embedded questions, but also a key semantic property of the former, namely their speech-act denotation. Finally, DFComp clauses are compared with plain embedded questions displaying root behavior under first-person matrix subjects and with English inverted embedded questions. Both are shown to pose minimal variants of the structural pattern proposed for DFComp clauses.

Some verbs cannot have their clausal complements replaced by referential expressions salva congruitate and/or veritate. This makes it difficult to analyse them as denoting relations of the type expressed by run-of-the-mill transitive verbs. The main goal in this work is to find an explanation for why some English embedding verbs are relational while others fail to be so. The question is, why can the latter, but not the former verbs have their embedded clauses replaced by direct speech complements? A comparison in the relevant contexts of the related categories of direct and indirect quotation reveals an important degree of coincidence that calls for (a) an overlapping semantic treatment, and (b) an interpretation of their often invoked differences as due to the contrasting semantic requirements of the class of verbs that fails to express a relation, non-relational ones. For us, the key distinguishing factor is utterance denotation, the differences between the two main classes of verbs identified in the work deriving from reliance on either the form or the content of the utterances involved. In order to account for these facts, we propose a substantial revision of the Davidsonian approach to clausal complementation.

In this work, noise sources were studied in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) by evaluating the noise from various sources, including the influence of the work of the NICU staff. The objective was to evaluate the acoustic quality in the usual conditions in NICU rooms and inside incubators by monitoring the noise in both environments, and then data were processed using artificial neural networks. Although some types of noise were accurately classified in this way, the lack of uniformity of their sound spectra, their simultaneity, and concomitance hindered the unequivocal interpretation of some results with the classification models. After analyzing the results, it can be affirmed that the alarms of equipment had a remarkable influence on the acoustic environment. Other important influences also appeared due to the conversations of the staff, the use of the telephone, and the hauling of equipment and furniture.

Traffic microsimulation models use the movement of individual driver-vehicle-units (DVUs) and their interactions, which allows a detailed estimation of the traffic noise using Common Noise Assessment Methods (CNOSSOS). The Dynamic Traffic Noise Assessment (DTNA) methodology is applied to real traffic situations, then compared to on-field noise levels from measurement campaigns. This makes it possible to determine the influence of certain local traffic factors on the evaluation of noise. The pattern of distribution of vehicles along the avenue is related to the logic of traffic light control. The analysis of the inter-cycles noise variability during the simulation and measurement time shows no influence from local factors on the prediction of the dynamic traffic noise assessment tool based on CNOSSOS. A multifractal approach of acoustic waves propagation and the source behaviors in the traffic area are implemented. The novelty of the approach also comes from the multifractal model’s freedom which allows the simulation, through the fractality degree, of various behaviors of the acoustic waves. The mathematical backbone of the model is developed on Cayley–Klein-type absolute geometries, implying harmonic mappings between the usual space and the Lobacevsky plane in a Poincaré metric. The isomorphism of two groups of SL(2R) type showcases joint invariant functions that allow associations of pulsations–velocities manifolds type.

Natural sounds are integral elements of the natural environment that are frequently associated with natural parks and similar areas. They are, indisputably, inherent components of landscapes and their contents of natural and historical features, and particularly of their wildlife. Natural sounds constitute an indicator of the health of the wildlife habitat and the diverse ecosystems that comprise such areas. The present generation has an acknowledged obligation to conserve these natural resources for the benefit of those to come. In the process of planning to achieve the objectives of acoustic quality of the natural soundscape, the fundamental principle for determining the health of the natural environment, which forms part of the general planning of the natural parks, is the preservation of the soundscape at levels compatible with the characteristics of the park. When deficiencies are identified, action needs to be taken to restore the soundscape to its natural condition. The objective of this project is to analyse the existence of “non-natural” noises foreign to the natural environment and protect the Natural Soundscape from intrusive acoustic impacts. The study was carried out on the “natural area” of Anceu, located in the municipality of Pontecaldelas in the province of Pontevedra, Galicia (Spain).

The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a very noisy place as compared to the intrauterine environment. To protect the neonate’s health, international guidelines suggest avoiding noise levels above 45 dB in NICUs, but this recommendation is not normally met. The incubator acoustic isolation and the acoustic features of the NICU play important roles in determining the noise measured inside the incubator. In this study, the influence of two types of rooms, one with sound-absorbent covering and the other with reverberant surfaces, on the acoustic isolation of a neonatal incubator was evaluated using three acoustic isolation indexes: the level difference, the apparent sound reduction index, and the standardized level difference. Results show that the acoustic isolation of the incubator is very poor, with a level difference below 11 dBA at all frequencies. At 62.5 Hz, the level difference measured in both rooms exhibits a negative value, indicating that the incubator amplifies the noise coming from the NICU. Isolation of the incubator is poor, and the reverberation time (RT) of the containing room influences RT of the incubator, which is consequently higher when the containing room is reverberant; for example, the incubator RT in the reverberant NICU is 0.72 s higher at 500 Hz than that in a room with sound-absorbent covering.

New-borns are exposed to high noise levels inside infant incubators. Some authors suggest that these noise levels are amplified by the reverberant nature of the materials that compose incubators. In this paper, the impulse response and the reverberation time of an incubator with standard dimensions were calculated. Two incubator configurations were evaluated, with and without mattress, under two measurements methods, impulsive, and interrupted noise method. The incubator was considered as a linear time-invariant system, and therefore the impulse response was easily obtained for each configuration and measurement method. Consequently, the impulse response for each of the six-octave bands was obtained to get the reverberation time in each band.

NResults show reverberation times (T30) with mattress of 0.6 s (average of all 1/8 octave band frequencies), measured in a room with controlled acoustic conditions (reverberation time of the room below 0.15 s). The longest sound persistence was obtained at low frequencies, with a reverberation time of 1.47 s in the configuration with mattress, and of 1.87 s in the one without mattress. Even if the average reverberation time is relatively reasonable for a standard room, it may be considered long and uncomfortable for such a small space. It is essential to highlight that, due to the low acoustic isolation of the incubator dome, there is a considerable influence of the reverberation time of the room in which the incubator is located.

This paper presents a dialogical analysis of discourses with intolerant tones against President Dilma Rousseff published by mass media during her impeachment process. Based on a dialogical perspective on discourse, it analyzes verbal and visual utterances from magazine Isto É, in its April 06, 2016 issue, and from newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, in its May 02, 2016 issue. We observe how media produces those discourses and targets subjects with intolerance. Our results reveal that while intolerant tones are addressed to a specific victim, they also presuppose a chorus of support from those who share their values and feed their production, reception, and transmission. This process encourages intolerance and polarization within society. The arguments made in this paper lead us to think about the relevant role played by a responsible media that respects differences and is proactive, critical, investigative, and committed to social issues. This results in a chorus of support focused not only on fighting against the current intolerance crisis but also on preserving democratic values.

This article explores the English phraseological verb constructions found within the verb argument construction (VAC) in the expressions used during the maritime towage operations which present the semantic feature [+MOVEMENT]. The purpose of this study, which is based on a specialized ad hoc corpus, is to identify the verb phraseological constructions and represent their syntactic and semantic properties. This will help to lay the foundations for the building of a term-ontological tool that may contribute to the enhancement of the terminological and contextual competences of the language professionals and of maritime language users. The corpus enquiry method has been both semasiological and onomasiological through the establishment of a step-by-step procedure for exploring the verb + argument patterns and the application of the push/pull semantic verb class by Levin (1993). The result of this study is the contribution of an inventory of English verb phraseology for the maritime to wage operations.

This chapter offers an overview of the institutionalization of the academic field of communication for development and social change (CDSC) in Spain in the twenty-first century, following a period of neglect and marginalization. The ongoing expansion of this field in the Spanish context is understood as a process of implosion, i.e., an inward collapse deriving from the inconsistencies and weaknesses of its tardy and hasty institutionalization. A triple methodological approach has been implemented in this case study: (a) an historiographical analysis of the field of the CDSC in Spain, (b) a bibliometric analysis of the papers published on this subject in the main Spanish journals between 2000 and 2015, and (c) four significant and relevant Spanish case studies in this regard. The results of this research basically point to (1) a late consolidation of the field in Spain, which has led to its implosion during its expansion and institutionalization stage (2011-to date); (2) a marginal production of scientific papers in comparison with the general academic production in the field of communication in Spain; (3) a certain subsidiarity in other more closely related fields (e.g., education for development) which has covered existing gaps and lacunas; (4) the fundamental role played by Spanish community radio; and (5) the potential of virtual communication spaces such as those deriving from the experience of the “Indignados” or 15-M movement (2011).

Paulo Freire continues to be a particularly fertile source for the field of communication for development and social change, and for evaluating the communication practices of researchers and social organisations. This article discusses five key concepts (error, process, praxis, community, and curiosity) especially relevant to Freire’s work in relation to other dominant communication processes. From these premises, the article draws lessons from research on these topics in Spain by comparing it with other similar international initiatives.

The article analyzes the continuities and descontinuities that occur between research, media planning and the construction of representations of senior citizens in Spanish advertising. The study, centered on advertisements about aging, senior citizens and health, employed a methodological triangulation that included techniques like discourse analysis, research, and a literature review on segmentation in advertising. The conclusions point to a limitation of the representations called into play in advertisements regarding the diversity established by professionals and in the scientific literature. It is necessary to face the challenge of overcoming the excessively individualistic views of the elderly and of the management of their health. At the same time, the conception of health as a symbolic space of conflict and negotiation emerges as an alternative.

Onomatopoeias constitute a much neglected subject in linguistics. The rather scarce literature on onomatopoeias is derived from a lack of reliable empirical data on the topic. In order to bridge this gap, we have compiled a parallel corpus of literary texts featuring onomatopoeias: the Onomatopoeia Parallel Corpus (ONPACOR). The corpus consists of onomatopoeias in English, Spanish and French extracted from comics and representative corpora of each language. ONPACOR has been built on the basis of existing translations to the languages of reference. This article describes the methodology used to compile the corpus, as well as the applications that it can have.

Sentiment Analysis and Opinion Mining are becoming increasingly important in the field of Computational Linguistics due to the growing presence of the Internet in our lives. For this reason, in this chapter we discuss the research we conducted on technical and methodological aspects to extract user-generated content from webpages. This data is going to be used to compile a corpus of customer reviews of car rentals in Andalusia. The process has two main phases: on the one hand, the semi-automatic download of information and on the other, the cleaning of the text. For the first step, Scrapy is going to be used. It is a framework written in Python programming language, which allows users to extract and store information in different formats. In the second step, a text editor will be used to clean and format the reviews through regular expressions. The resulting texts will be suitable for specific corpus tools to study different aspects of Sentiment Analysis.

This paper explores a teaching methodology —within the frame of Linguistics Applied to Language Teaching— for the development of written skills in other languages by college students. This proposal has been designed as part of the teaching experience with students belonging to the Northwest Cádiz Program. Students from the Universities of Washington and Western Washington go to Cádiz to enjoy a language immersion experience. Written skills in Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL) are encouraged exposing them to printed texts in both English and Spanish. This methodology favours contrastive analysis among both languages, translation, as well as writing academic essays in the target language within the context of higher education.

Many medical manuals provide information to diagnose patients and define their stage of evolution. However, the information in these reports is not always useful for speech therapists because they offer scarce linguistic data about the patient. This is compounded by the problem that different patients with the same diagnosis do not have to present the same symptoms. To solve this problem we propose the existence of a figure of an expert in the language that develops a clinical linguistic report of each patient. The objectives are to know the linguistic behavior of two huntington patients who are in the same stage of evolution; extract linguistic data that are not presented in the neurological reports and establish a comparison to clarify the similarities and differences between both. Therefore, we provide a clinical linguistic analysis, through spontaneous and guided conversation, of two huntingtonian patients with the same medical and sociolinguistic variables.

Also, we will study the maximal P-semigroups with a given Frobenius number as well as the P-semigroups with maximum embedding dimension.

This paper aims to show the benefits of two methods commonly used in speech therapy for, among other pathologies, dysarthria: the accent and the voice method. It also wants to emphasize that, when the speech therapist undertakes a rehabilitation work, he does not look for a normal voice but a “functional voice”. We understand by functional those that allows the person an adequate performance in different communicative situations. At the same time, we show that acoustic analysis is revealed as the most objective measurement tool of rehabilitation progress in dysarthria. In contrast to what has been done so far, in which only the pitch of a vowel is taken into account, we present -from some practical cases-the analysis of other parameters, such as the frequency of the other harmonics, amplitude and time, which provide us with very relevant data on the progression of the melodic curve and speech of the patient in general.

Starting with a brief review of the neurolinguistic concept and its reference to the cerebral location of the different language functions, we will study, from cases of aphasia in bilingual or multilingual patients and to adopted children who neuronally preserve their mother tongue after years without speaking it, the foreign language syndrome, the foreign accent syndrome, the mark that our mother tongue leaves on our brain and some myths or beliefs related to the matter. All this from the perspective of our brain.

Through an interdisciplinary research project, this work is presented as a walkthrough of the main linguistic and terminological characteristics of the vocabulary related to the jerez wine tasting. To do this, we start talking about the beginning of the investigations and development of this project. Then, we focus on the analysis of the different linguistic procedures that take place in the language of wine tasting in general and the in that of the jerez wines, in particular. Thus, we will specifically have a look at the scale of cleanliness and the scale of colours, which provides us an excellent proof of the specificity of these terms. Finally, this work is completed with an insight of future investigations.

There are not many studies on linguistic disturbances of Parkinson patients and a few we can find do not offer a complete picture about how all the language components are affected (phonetic phonologic, grammatical, lexical, semantic, pragmatic and textual level), which are located in different brain areas. Our main aim has to do with the relationship between language alterations and several clinical facts, as well as sociodemographic aspects within a group of patients who are affected by Parkinson. We have selected 46 patients, 42 of them have different kind of language disturbances, which have been related with socio-demographic (age, sex and cultural level) and clinical variables (progression time of the disease, Hoeh & Yahr Scale, UP-DRS-III, and L-dopa treatment). According to the distributions of previous variables, Test T of Student or U of Mann Withney has been used.

This paper considers whether examples such as “estaba todo el día que echaba humo, cualquier cosa la irritaba” correspond to an adjectival idiom (que echa humo) or to the constructional idiom [(alguien) estar (cuant pond) que X[verbo / locución verbal]]. The example is related to others, such as “una tortilla de patatas y pimientos que te chupas los dedos”, and so an examination is also performed to ascertain whether this is a manifestation of the construction [detart ind X[nombre] que Y[verbo / locución verbal]]. The analysis is based on Construction Grammar, this being the most suitable linguistic methodology for the study of the above-mentioned phraseological units. The fact that they are formed by fixed lexical elements (estar) and free slots (X and Y) allows us to use the constructionist perspective, which is currently flourishing in Spanish phraseology. The research shows that the units under study are not idioms but constructional idioms which are joined to the consecutive subordinate clauses in Spanish by means of two inheritance relationships: the instance link and the subpart link. Several conclusions can be drawn from this study: 1. the syntactic and pragmatic properties of the two constructional idioms that are examined are derived or inherited from the properties of consecutive clauses; 2. the network organization of constructions in languages is confirmed in the data that is studied; and 3. the continuum between a grammatical pole and a lexical one should be completed by the continuum between a non-phraseological pole and a phraseological one; constructional idioms like those that are examined would reside at the centre of this continuum.

The edition of dictionaries is tending more and more towards online publication, as opposed to print editions. The latter are less comfortable to use and less attractive for consultation in a society in which new technologies are taking over in all areas of daily life. Even dictionaries with multiple print editions, such as the Spanish Royal Academy’s Diccionario de la Lengua Española, commonly have online versions. With the aim of drawing attention to the Diccionario de locuciones idiomáticas del español actual (DiLEA), which has been published online, its most notable characteristics are presented here. Compiled according to the theoretical bases of linguistics, lexicography, phraseology and phraseography, DiLEA offers morphological, syntactic and semantic information on a large collection of idioms, in some cases even including pragmatic details. All the information given is backed up by authentic examples of the idioms in use, which justify the linguistic behaviour shown in their respective lexicographical entries.

We analyse the diaphasic marking of euphemistic verbal idioms in the dictionary of the Spanish Royal Academy and the dictionary by Seco, Andrés and Ramos (2017), starting from the data obtained from the Diccionario de locuciones idiomáticas del español actual (Penadés Martínez 2019a). The study focuses on verbal idioms referring to the area of death, a field of linguistic interdiction which is not usually correct-ly treated in dictionaries either as regards the euphemistic label or in relation to other usage labels. The marking of euphemistic idioms presents the following problems: lack of agreement as to whether marking is necessary or possible; partial agreement in the conception of the term euphemistic; unsystematic lexicographical treatment of the euphemistic label; disagreement as regards the presentation of the label and its value; and inexistence of theoretical consider-ations regarding the possibility that a single idiom may present the euphemistic label along with other register labels.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the use of the dictionary in L2/second language learning using the data obtained from a survey carried out by a group of 46 French informants, all of whom are teachers of Spanish as a foreign language in France. Their students are adolescents in secondary education, baccalaureate or vocational training. The survey is divided into three parts. The first is used to get to know the informants’ profiles by means of questions regarding their personal details. The second part consists of a first block of 11 questions aimed at obtaining information about the use of the dictionary by teachers and students; to this end, questions are asked regarding the type of dictionary recommended to the students and those used by the teachers: bilingual / monolingual, general (language dictionary) / specific (e.g. dictionary of phraseological units), on paper / on line; informants are also asked about the type of content that is most frequently searched for in the dictionary. The third part of the survey consists of a second block of 6 questions about the activities designed to make use of the dictionary, as well as a final open-ended question inviting general discussion of its use. The data obtained are quantitatively and qualitatively analysed. Five conclusions arise from this research relative to 1) the training of teachers in the subject of Spanish as a second language; 2) the training of lexicography teachers; 2) teachers’ recommendations for French/Spanish bilingual dictionaries; 4) the type of information (orthographical and lexical) searched for in the dictionary by teachers and the content of the activities designed (vocabulary and writing exercises); and 5) the students’ almost total lack of interest in the dictionary.

We analyze a controversial text of De rerum natura(DRN) by Lucretius (V, 1161-1240). In it he wonders how the idea of God arose among the primitives by offering two etiologies: A legitimate one (vv. 1169-1182), which states that it was through religious apparitions in dreams. And another not legitimate, the astral religiosity (1183-1240). The disqualification of this has been generalized by many editors throughout the text. We will not argue esoterically, or Freudian, nor philosophically, we only record the autonomy of the first etiology through syntax of the text and the use of epicurean sources including the Herculaneum papyri.

Articulation and phonation are affected in 70 % and up to 90 % of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). What we propose in this work is the study of a small aspect of the phonetics of patients with Parkinson’s disease: the alteration of VOT (Voice Onset Time) in spontaneous monologues. Perhaps this particularity is a useful symptom for detecting Parkinson’s disease. We will use spontaneous sentences recorded and analyzed with the Praat 6.0.40 software from a group of 8 subjects affected by PD and a control group, matched in age and education, of 7 subjects. Both research groups (the experimental group and the control one) were obtained from the predominantly Cadiz Andalusian modality.

We focus on two issues of great relevance in networks in this period: the virality and communicative aggressiveness in Twitter and in Spain, taking as an example the hashtag #niñosenlacalle. The results of the analysis carried out with computational and corpus tools reveal a fairly compact network around three extremely viralized tweets. The keyword analyses show the disqualifying intention and the aggressiveness of the publications, with extremely offensivewords among the most relevant ones in the hashtag.

Neological uses, although originated by the resources provided by the linguistic systems and enhanced by the norm of each community of speakers, since they are phenomena that materialize in the speech, deserve to be considered from the perspective of the coding and decoding processes that allow them, as well as their corresponding cognitive and brain correlations. In this work, with the support of examples drawn from the Bank of Neologisms of the Cervantes Virtual Center, we deal with reflection on the computational and associative mechanisms that enable the neological creation and interpretation processes, taking into account both to the involvement of attention and memory, as neurocognitive functions that are projected in language, and to the consequent participation of latent declarative and procedural strategies in neology. As a result, we also achieve a more flexible and dynamic characterization of the nature and structure of the lexicon of languages.

Chromosomopathies are genetic anomalies that are generally related to the composition or order of genes within chromosomes. Nowadays, the knowledge about such deficiencies, concerning those disorders of higher prevalence (dyslexia, autism, Down syndrome, etc.) and their phenotypic manifestations is quite extensive, thanks to years of working on standardized protocols for early diagnosis and psychological intervention and speech therapy. Unfortunately, that is not the case with those chromosomal alterations of lower prevalence, although they also entail significant cognitive and linguistic deficiencies. This fact supposes a great stumbling block for the effective and coordinated action between specialists in the treatments directed at increasing the communicative and linguistic competences of this population and, in sum, improving their quality of life. The interpretation of language not only as an instrument of social communication, but also as a system of individual representation in which the main mechanisms of cognition are projected justifies an approach to all these questions taking language as an essential axis.

From the different investigations carried out on the study of neological creations in the language of advertising (cf., especially, Vega Moreno, 2010 and 2016a), a predominance in the use of acronymy as a peculiar procedure to create new lexical units in the field of advertising has been observed. That is why this paper will address not only questions concerning the phenomenon of lexical creativity, or neology, in general, but also, questions about the result of this process, that is, neologisms, in particular those within the language of advertising, and, more specifically, the lexical units created by this mechanism of acronymy, with special attention paid to the analysis of current tendencies of this linguistic procedure in this kind of language.

This paper analyses the beliefs and attitudes of pre-service teachers regarding error correction in the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language in Early Childhood Education. The problems derive from the application of didactic schemes expected for educational stages where the oral and written uses of the target language coexist in a balanced way, although in Early Childhood Education (3-6 years old) the participants have only the possibility of oral use. The research methodology includes questionnaires that gather information of the participants’ previous language training, together with their own experience of foreign language acquisition exclusively orally, and, finally, a focal group in which the participants reflect upon all of this. The results show a tendency to reproduce previous didactic models that include teaching and learning practices with written language. Nonetheless, non-error correction is considered as a correction technique per se.

This chapter examines the state-of-the-art of EMI lecturing at Cadiz University, Spain. The rationale of the research lies in the lecturers’ main challenges for issues related to the use of EFL and EMI methodologies. Data were collected from a questionnaire to which EMI lecturers responded (N=22; 69%) and from a focus group carried out with a cross-sectional sample of participants (N=6). The conclusion sheds light on the following: For the first time, Spanish universities have started to design language policies aimed at using English for lecturing, although the initial implementation shows diverse effects, depending on whether EMI teaching takes place in one scientific area or another. This panorama suggests an adaptation of EMI training. Secondly, lecturers are committed to EMI training not only for language but also for methodological issues. They also demand greater recognition for teaching courses in EFL. Potential solutions and recommendations are proposed.
